Pharmaceutical compositions and methods for treating neurological disorders by administering same are provided. The compositions comprise dextromethorphan in combination with quinidine. This invention also provides methods of reducing CNS and gastrointestinal side effects associated with a long term, dextromethorphan/low-dose quinidine combination therapy.

A method of reducing Central Nervous System (CNS) and gastrointestinal side effects associated with a long term, dextromethorphan/low-dose quinidine combination therapy by permitting a patient to acclimate to dextromethorphan, the method comprising administrating to the patient of a sub-optimal combination dose for a period of no less than 7 days and no more than 20 days prior to increasing the dose of dextromethorphan to a therapeutically beneficial amount, wherein the sub-optimal combination dose comprises dextromethorphan from about 10 mg/day to about 30 mg/day and quinidine from about 5 mg/day to about 15 mg/day with the proviso that the weight to weight ratio of dextromethorphan to quinidine is 1:0.75 or less of quinidine.
