PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of a retardation film, which gives a retardation film showing excellent adhesiveness to an acrylic resin substrate and an alignment layer and reduction in alignment defects.SOLUTION: The production method of a retardation film includes steps of: preparing an acrylic resin substrate containing at least one of an antioxidant and a UV absorbent; preparing a composition for forming an alignment layer, the composition comprising a photo-aligning compound and a solvent in which solubility 23°C of the antioxidant and the UV absorbent included in the acrylic resin substrate is each 15 (g/100 g of the solvent) of less, solubility at 23°C of the acrylic resin substrate is 0.1 (g/100 g of the solvent) or more, and solubility at 23°C of the photo-aligning compound is 3.0 (g/100 g of the solvent) or more; forming an alignment layer on one surface side of the acrylic resin substrate; and forming a retardation layer on the alignment layer.
