PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible that a catheter or sheath having a large diameter is percutaneously or surgically introduced via an iliac, femoral, or subclavian artery and is taken out without other damages or complications for a patient.SOLUTION: An expandable sheath for introduction into the body, which is in a small cross-sectional shape, and in which at least a part of the distal end comes into an enlarged cross-sectional shape by subsequent expansion, is used in vascular system and has utility in the introduction and removal of implant delivery catheters. The distal end of the sheath is maintained in the small cross-sectional shape during advancement to the arteries into the aorta. Subsequently, the distal end of the sheath is expanded using a radial dilatation device, which is removed prior to the introduction of implant delivery catheters. For example, the sheath includes a supported proximal end, a supported distal end, and a shrinkable central part. The sheath in the small cross-sectional shape is inserted, is expanded into the cross-sectional shape which is large in the radial direction, and is subsequently shrunken into a small size in the radial direction for easy removal. |
