An apparatus for conducting a working memory test on a candidate includes a presentation means operable to (a) present a short term memory ranking rule to the candidate; and (b) thereafter present a series of questions to the candidate. The presentation of each question comprises: (a) presenting a randomly selected set of images to the candidate in a predefined spaced apart relationship, each of the images having a known or deducible relative ranking to one another; and (b) asking the candidate whether a ranking of the images in the order presented to the candidate satisfies the short term memory ranking rule. The apparatus further includes a candidate input means operable to obtain from the candidate an answer to each of the questions, the candidate input means further operable to obtain from the candidate an indication of their confidence by allowing the candidate to nominate one of a plurality of confidence bands which best corresponds with their confidence that any one or more of the answers were correct. Finally, a timer means is provided for determining the time taken for the candidate to answer the questions. |
