<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device capable of performing local dimming and realizing in a simple structure further thinning, and moreover obtaining wide light distribution. <P>SOLUTION: The surface light source device 1 is provided with a light guide plate 2, a reflection sheet 3, a prism sheet 4, a diffusion sheet 5 and a pair of an incident light generation sources 6a, 6b. Each of the incident light generation sources 6a, 6b faces each of light incident surfaces 2a, 2b of the light guide body 2 and is structured capable of controlling distribution of emission luminance in a length direction of the light incident surfaces 2a, 2b. On one face 2s2 of the light guide plate 2, there are formed a flat surface part 9 and a groove part 11 (or a protruded line part), and on the other face 2s1, there are formed a plurality of protruded line parts 8 extended in perpendicular direction to the light incident surfaces 2a, 2b and arranged in parallel in a length direction of the light incident surfaces 2a, 2b.
