<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of forming a columnar spacer playing an auxiliary role without increasing the number of selective etchings by photolithography technology and suppressing design limitation of display pixels. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a first substrate 1; a second substrate 2 that is disposed so as to face the first substrate 1 and clamps a liquid crystal along with the first substrate 1; and the columnar spacer that is provided on the first substrate 1 or the second substrate 2 and retains the first substrate 1 and the second substrate 2 spaced at a predetermined interval. The columnar spacer includes a main column 51, and auxiliary columns 52 and 53 having the cross section smaller than that of the main column 51.
