<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering system having a steering shaft that locks the rotation thereof without requiring dedicated machining. <P>SOLUTION: The electric power steering system includes: an electric motor 21 for applying an assist force to steering; a speed reduction mechanism 50 for reducing the rotation of the electric motor 21 and transmitting the reduced speed to the steering shaft; and a lock device 30 for regulating the rotation of the steering. The lock device 30 includes a first friction plate 31 provided in an output shaft 21A of the electric motor 21, a second friction plate 32 to come in contact with the first friction plate 31, and a driving part 35 moving the second friction plate 32 to the first friction plate 31.
