The purpose of the present invention is to provide a media treatment apparatus and a media treatment method, which can improve media treatment speed by reducing time required for discrimination in a discriminating unit. To achieve this, the media treatment apparatus of the present invention includes: a teller unit (100) having a first space (110) where media are stacked upon deposit and a second space (120) where media are stacked upon withdrawal; a skew detecting unit (210) configured to detect whether the media transferred from the first space (110) skew; a skew correction unit (220) configured to correct a skew state of the media when it is determined that skew correction is required in the skew detecting unit (210); the discriminating unit (200) configured to discriminate whether an abnormality of the media of which the skew state is corrected occurs; and a media storage unit (400) consisting of a plurality of cassettes in order to accommodate the media deposited via the discriminating unit (200) or accommodate the media to be withdrawn.
