<p>Video processing in which motion vectors are identified by applying a spatial filter 402-404 to candidate motion vector compensated pixel to pixel dissimilarity values 401 to determine the best fit motion vector. The spatial extent or size of the filter aperture is varied depending on a spatial activity or local complexity measure. The motion compensated pixel to pixel dissimilarity values are preferably displaced frame differences. The filters may be linear filters or running average filters. At each given pixel, the filter aperture centred on that pixel may be determined to be the smallest window in which an accumulated activity values reaches a threshold. The filter output may be interpolated to approximate a filter of non-integral radius whose accumulated activity measure is exactly the given threshold. The filter output is preferably reduced in proportion to the number of pixels contributing to the accumulated dissimilarity value.</p> |
