Mobile control room with real-time environment awareness

A method and apparatus track the location of a mobile control device within a process plant. A location awareness component generates information pertaining to the location of the mobile control room device and a first routine interprets 2920 information generated by the location awareness component according to information stored in a database to determine a relationship between the location of the portable device and a layout of the process plant. A second routine generates 2925 a graphic for depiction on the display according to the determined relationship between the position of the device and the layout of the plant. The second routine may generate a real time graphic of the location of control device within the plant. The location may be presented from an overhead perspective or in three dimensions from an eye level perspective. The location awareness component may comprise a GPS receiver, a RFID reader or a plurality of sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes.
