An apparatus for measuring the insulation provided by a smoke or fire barrier curtain material 61 comprises a temperature sensor 68 (e.g. a disc thermocouple) and a physical means 64 for maintaining surface contact of the sensor with the sample. In use, the side of the sample without the sensor is exposed to an elevated temperature and the temperature-time relationship on the unexposed surface is measured. The physical means is preferably suitable for an intumescent material and may be a wire passing through the sample with a weight pulling it back, so that the sensor is held against the surface of the sample when the sample swells because of heat. Alternatively, the physical means may be a U-shaper wire passing through the sample holding the sample as a staple or stitch, or a sprung counterbalance 64 arranged to hold the sensor 68 when the material expands. Also disclosed is a fire or smoke curtain in which the bottom of the curtain, in deployment, is provided with additional insulation.
|
