Disclosed are a submerged arc welding apparatus and a vertical upward welding method using the same. The submerged arc welding apparatus according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a flux container of which the opened front side part is installed to face the welding portion of a base material and the inner side receives a flux; and a flux shield movably inserted into grooves in both sides of the rear side part of the flux container, and having a coupling hole to which a welding torch is coupled.
