A method for determining a susceptibility to prostate cancer in a human individual, the method comprising analyzing nucleic acid from the human individual for the presence of at least one allele of at least one polymorphic marker, wherein the at least one allele comprises rs7501939, allele C, detecting the presence of allele C of polymorphic marker rs7501939 in the sample, and determining an increased genetic susceptibility to prostate cancer for the human individual from the presence of the at least one allele in the nucleic acid, and, performing at least one of a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test and a digital rectal examination (DRE) on the individual determined to have the increased genetic susceptibility.
