PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dinaphthothiophene compound useful as a refractive index improver for a plastic optical material, and a polymer comprising a dinaphthothiophene skeleton.SOLUTION: The dinaphthothiophene compound of the present invention is a compound represented by the general formula (1), where R is a substituent on a benzene ring not condensed with a thiophene ring and is a methoxy group, a hydroxyl group, a 2-allyloxy group, a 2-hydroxyethoxy group, a 2,3-epoxypropoxy group, a 2-methacryloyloxyethoxy group or the like. In addition, the polymer comprising a dinaphthothiophene skeleton is a polymer derived from the dinaphthothiophene compound represented by the formula (1).
