An aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate contains lauric ether of polyethylene oxide as emulsifying agent, a water-soluble plasticizer having a free hydroxyl group (e.g. benzyl alcohol), and methyl, ethyl, n- or iso-propyl, or iso-butyl alcohol. The emulsifying agent may be used in an amount of 5-20 per cent calculated on the monomeric vinyl acetate. The emulsion may also comprise thickeners, e.g. starch or natural gums or resins.ALSO:A size for textiles consists of an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate containing a lauric ether of polyethylene oxide as the emulsifying agent, a water-soluble plasticizer having a free hydroxyl group (e.g. benzyl alcohol), and methyl, ethyl, n- or iso-propyl, or iso-butyl alcohol. The emulsifying agent may be used in an amount of 5-20 per cent calculated on the monomeric vinyl acetate. The emulsion may also comprise thickeners, e.g. starch or natural gums or resins, and after application may be insolubilized by caustic alkali, ammonia, or organic bases. In an example, lauric ether of polyethylene oxide, benzoyl peroxide, benzyl alcohol, and n-propyl alcohol are dissolved in hot water, and vinyl acetate added and polymerized by stirring under reflux. p
