[Class 94 (i)] In a machine for packing cigarettes and the like in slide and shell cartons, the shells S, Fig. 2b, which may have been erected by mechanism such as is described in Specification 466,177, are fed into position for charging by a plate 12 having an adjustable downwardly projecting wall 13 adapted to engage the upper edge of the shell. The plate is adjustably secured to a bar 14 on a horizontally reciprocating slide 15 moving in guides 16. A crank disc 19 and link 20 operates a lever 18 having a link 17 pivoted to a block 21 in a slot 22 in the slide. Normally the block is locked by a catch 23 but can be disconnected by a lever 26 and link 24 to allow the block to slide idly in the slot, so that the slide 15 can be retracted in the event of jamming. The shell is prevented from moving off the mouthpiece 28 by an abutment 34 on a bell-crank lever 36 operated by a cam 37. The cam is shaped to provide a second dwell in a position in which a second abutment 44 holds the filled packet after it has been thrust clear of the mouth-piece 28 and is ready for discharge. The ejection of the filled slides from the pockets 29 on a rotary table 10, Fig. 1a, is effected by a pusher 30 mounted as a guidebar 31 and reciprocated by a crank disc 32 and link 33. Ejection takes place when the pocket is immediately behind the mouth-piece 28. The rotary table may be as described in Specification 466,176, or it may be replaced by a rectilinearly moving conveyer device. When the table is adapted for a duplex machine, a second pusher is mounted on a guide bar 169 and is actuated in timed relation with the pusher 30 by racks 70, 71, and pinions 72, 73. During the inserting operation, the shell is held between adjustable guide walls 45, 46, Fig. 5, and the wall 46 is mounted on an arm 47 so that it can be lifted upwards when pushers 53 on chains 52 feed the packet on to a discharge flap 54. The flap is mounted on a bell-crank lever 56 and delivers the packets to a horizontal stacking device 55. A device for detecting faulty packets, e.g. as described in Specification 477,924 may be provided so that an arm 62 engages a pin 63 and holds the flap 54 in the raised position so that the faulty packet is not fed into the stacking device.
