PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide nucleic acid probe-based diagnostic assays for living prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.SOLUTION: Disclosed is a use of an ssrA gene or a fragment thereof consisting of at least 10 nucleotides as target regions in a nucleic acid probe assay for in vitro detection and identification of prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms. A fragment of the ssrA gene molecule corresponding to a region of high homology from a 5' end or a 3' end of a DNA molecule is used as a universal target region and used as a region in a nucleic acid probe assay between species and of a genus specific probe.
