[Class 82 (ii)] In the concentration by froth flotation of oxidized ores and particularly of alkaline earth minerals, for example calcium carbonate ores which are to be used in cement manufacture, there is used as a flotation reagent the residue left on distilling the acid oil produced by acidifying soap stock obtained by treating a raw vegetable, animal, or fish oil or fat with a base. The residue contains a certain amount of free acid together with fatty acid glyceride esters. Instead of using the residue itself as a reagent a derivative may be used, e.g. it may be treated, for example, by hydrolysis, saponification, sulphonation, or sulphonation followed by saponification, to convert the glyceride esters into free fatty acids or their derivatives, the treated product being used in the flotation process. The reagents act as collectors and in some cases also as frothers. Oils and fats from which the reagents may bo derived may for example be obtained from soya beans, copra, cotton seeds, peanuts or palm seeds, and whales, herrings, and other fishes. Examples are given of the concentration of limestones, marl, and chalk.</p> |
