摘要 A method for encoding a data value array comprises: generating respective complementary most-significant and least-significant data portions, the most-significant data portion representing plural most significant bits (MSBs) of a value, and the least-significant data portion being dependent upon the remaining least significant bits (LSBs) of that value; generating one or more data sets (e.g. a significance map) indicating positions, relative to the values array, of most-significant data portions of predetermined magnitude ranges; encoding the data sets to an output data stream using binary encoding; and including data defining the least-significant portions in the output data stream. The encoding step further comprises: selecting one of plural complementary sub-ranges of a code value set, defined by a range variable, according to a current input data value; assigning the input data to a code value within the selected sub-range; modifying the code value set depending on assigned code value and selected sub-range size; successively increasing the range variable if detected as less than a predetermined minimum size, outputting an encoded data bit for each size-increasing operation; and rule-based processing to determine whether to set the range variable to that from a subset (each having a LSB equalling zero), and indicating accordingly.
