A device 108 supporting big data in a process plant 10 includes an interface to a communications network 105, a cache Mx configured to store data at the device 108, and a processor PMCX to cause the data to be cached and transmitted (e.g., streamed) for storage at a unitary, logical central area or memory or database 120. The data storage area 120 stores data using a common format. The device 108 time stamps cached data which may be all data generated, created or received at the device 108. The device 108 may be a field device, a controller, an input/output device, a network management device, a user interface device, or a historian device, or a node of a network supporting big data in the process plant. Multiple devices 108 in the network may support layered or levelled caching of data. |
