A filter holder for an espresso coffee machine comprises a handle (1) and an outer holder (2), which outer holder is adapted to receive either a coffee container having a filter, the filter having a plurality of perforations adapted to allow passage of liquid coffee from the coffee container or a coffee capsule through a flow path to a dispensing spout. The flow path includes an intermediate chamber 15 leading to an outlet throat 16, the throat being in direct fluid communication with the dispensing spout. In an alternative arrangement, the filter may comprise filter plate having a plurality of upstanding elements adapted to tear, in use, a surface of a coffee capsule, and a plurality of perforation adapted to allow passage of coffee from the capsule through a flow path to the outlet. The outlet may comprise an elongate channel with two opposed spouts 6, 7 extending in opposite direction to allow coffee to be discharged into two cups. The cross-sectional area of the throat may be smaller than the cross-sectional area of the spout. |
