A process for preparing alpha-olefin oligomers comprising contacting an olefinic feedstock comprising C5-C20 alpha-olefins with a liquid complex catalyst comprising [i] at least one metal halide salt of the formula MX3, wherein M is aluminium or gallium, and X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, such as AlCl3; and [ii] at least one Lewis basic donor ligand containing a donor atom which is oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen, phosphorous, arsenic or selenium, selected from urea, N,N-dimethylurea, N,N-dimethylthiourea, acetamide, dimethyl acetamide, ethyl acetate dimethylsulfoxide, trioctylphosphine oxide; and the molar ratio of metal halide salt to Lewis basic donor ligand is 1:1 to 4:1. Also disclosed is a composition comprising the alpha-olefin oligomers, and use of the composition in lubricant base oils. |
