A device 1 for dispensing a laboratory sample carrier 2 from a stack 3 of sample carriers comprises means for retaining the stack of carriers 4,6, an ejector mechanism 8 comprising a displaceable mechanism 27 with a carrier support portion 19 connected by a hinge to a carrier transporting portion 20, a displacement means 16, 17, 18 for moving the ejector mechanism and a base support 26 for supporting the carrier transport portion. In a first position, the stack, ideally held in a hopper, is supported by the carrier transporting portion which itself is supported by base support. A sample carrier, such as a microscope slide, from the bottom of the stack is held in a carrier accommodating region of the carrier transport portion. Initiation of the displacement means, moves the ejector mechanism so that the carrier transport portion moves past the base support and pivots upon hinge 21 so that the carrier transport portion drops or collapses so that the sample carrier has moved from a horizontal orientation to a substantially vertical orientation. Ideally, the sample carrier is subjected to processing such as marking or labelling in this position. In this second position, the carrier support portion supports the carrier stack. |
