[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] Relates to lathes of the kind in which the blank rotates between centres in the interior of a hollow support apertured to admit the tool and consists in pressing the support as a solid cylindrical sleeve fitting in the spindles. The work 1 is mounted between centres on headstock and tailstock spindles 4, 3 on which is moulded a sleeve 5 cut away at 8 to admit a grinding wheel or turning tool 2. The headstock 11 is mounted on the sleeve and traverses with it under the control of a screw and nut 12. The screw may be geared to the spindle 4 and may be driven independently. The spindle is driven either by the worm gearing shown or by belt or electric motor. In modifications the spindle 4 is fed by racks or cams with mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic drive. Several sleeves may be combined into one machine preferably with a common drive. A rotary tool may be provided with a sliding supporting sleeve for axial traverse instead of the rink.
