[Class 136 (i)] A removable cover or shield for covering the wheel axis opening of a mudguard or like wheel enclosure comprises a resilient panel whose peripheral edge is non-conformant with the surface contour of the mudguard surrounding the opening, the panel being adapted to be flexed during mounting so as tightly to engage the mudguard surfaces, and being retained in this strained position by securing-means. The mudguard 11 has the usual semicircular wheel access opening, the edges of the opening being curled back to form a trough-like reinforcement 13. The cover comprises a resilient sheet-metal panel 14 having a straight lower edge and a curved (e.g., streamlined) outline sufficiently large to overlap semicircular openings differing somewhat in size. The lower edge of the panel 14 is bent back to form a horizontal flange 15, to the upper surface'of which is riveted &c. a reinforcing bar 16, the ends of which are bent back to form hooks 17, Fig. 2, adapted to engage the trough-like reinforcement 13 at either side of the mudguard opening- and. thus support the cover. The curved edge of the panel is folded back at 18 and provided with a rubber edging 19. The panel 14 is provided with a vertical stay 21 formed near the top with a circular boss 24 to receive a similarly-shaped part 25 of the panel, the parts 24, 25 being held together by a rotary stud 28 having an enlarged round head 27, which is rotated by means of a tool inserted in a hexagonal hole 32, whereby a latch 29, 30 is engaged with the edge 13 of the mudguard opening. The latch 29 is held in the operative position by a stationary spring 33 engaging its notched lower end 36. In mounting the panel, it is turned about its hooked lower connection, and then flexed so as to press against the outer surface of the mudguard, the panel being retained in this strained position by the latch.
