Prediction of motion information for an area (6.4) of an enhancement layer (6.1) of a scalable video encoding / decoding scheme (i.e. a motion derivation process) based on motion information of a co-located area (6.5) of the reference layer (6.2) is corrected to compensate for the effects of a compression process applied to the motion information in the reference layer (see Fig. 5). The correction comprises a modification of the position (1) in the reference layer used to pick-up motion information. More relevant motion information (3) can be used which was not previously available due to the effects of using the compression scheme. The correcting may comprise applying a rounding function to at least one of the coordinates of the co-located position or picking up a correction value for at least one of the coordinates of the co-located position based on a lookup table indexed by the coordinate.
