Defibrillators detecting orientation of electrode connection to adjust energy dosage

Embodiments of the present concept are directed to external defibrillators that include an electrode connection port having multiple connection options, and include a detection device to determine an electrode connection configuration so as to provide an appropriate electrical shock to a patient. The detection device detects the electrode connection configuration of a plug connector for connected electrodes to determine if the plug connector is in an adult orientation or a pediatric orientation. The external defibrillator is configured to a deliver an electrical shock with less energy when the pediatric orientation is detected rather than the adult orientation.

1. An external defibrillator for use with electrodes having a plug connector, the external defibrillator comprising:
an energy storage module for storing an electrical charge; a defibrillation port structured to guide via the electrodes at least a portion of the stored electrical charge to a patient; a receiver structured to receive the plug connector of the electrodes; a detector coupled to the receiver and structured to determine whether the plug connector is inserted into the receiver in a first orientation or the plug connector is inserted into the receiver in a different second orientation; a processor coupled to the detector and structured to cause the defibrillation port to guide a first defibrillation energy via the electrodes when the detector determines that the plug connector is inserted into the receiver in the first orientation, and structured to cause the defibrillation port to guide a second defibrillation energy via the electrodes when the detector determines that the plug connector is inserted into the receiver in the second orientation, the first defibrillation energy greater than the second defibrillation energy.
