An apparatus to recognize a motion includes: an image obtaining unit which obtains a first depth image, a second depth image, and a third depth image; an object detection region setting unit which sets an object detection region on the third depth image using a hand region included in the first depth image and the second depth image; an object detecting unit which detects the hand region included in the first to third depth images and detects the hand region included in the third depth image based on the set object detection region; and a recognition object determining unit which determines whether the hand region included in at least one depth image among the detected first to third depth images is a motion recognition object.
