PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique capable of improving the performance of an optical element represented by a polarizing element.SOLUTION: In a split wire element, each of a plurality of split wires SPW has a gap formed in a y direction at a period Λ equal to or more than a rayleigh wavelength (λ/n). Thereby, the split wire element can improve optical performance rather than a wire grid element constituted of a straight wire without a periodical structure in the y direction.
