1. A method for transferring a slurry of plant-based biomass into a reactor vessel, the method comprising:
providing plant-based biomass, wherein the biomass is made up of discrete pieces, wherein at least 20% of the discrete pieces have a greatest dimension of at least about ⅛ inch; combining a transport fluid with the biomass to form a pre-reaction slurry, wherein the pre-reaction slurry has a first weight ratio of fluid to biomass; pressurizing the pre-reaction slurry to a pressure above about 300 psi; removing at least a portion of the transport fluid from the pressurized pre-reaction slurry in a pre-reactor vessel to form a pressurized concentrated slurry with a second weight ratio of fluid to biomass, wherein the first weight ratio of fluid to biomass is greater than the second weight ratio of fluid to biomass; combining a reaction fluid from a reactor vessel with the pressurized concentrated slurry to form a pressurized reaction slurry; and transferring the pressurized reaction slurry from the pre-reactor vessel into the reactor vessel, wherein the pressurized reaction slurry is received at the reactor vessel at a pressure above about 300 psi. |
