Abstract Disclosed is a carrier plate arrangement for supporting a coupling assembly on a rail wagon, the coupling assembly including a yoke, the carrier plate arrangement comprising a yoke carrier adapted to support the yoke, and a safety plate, the safety plate being positioned in use inboard of the yoke carrier. In some forms the safety plate includes a cut-out portion. Also disclosed is a method of retrofitting a rail wagon comprise steps of repositioning the safety plate inboard of the yoke carrier and removing material from the safety plate to provide clearance about the safety plate for pre-existing components.
