PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer sheet capable of obtaining a clear image at high-speed and high-energy printing, without lowering density in which a surface of a reception layer turns brown or causing thermal fusion.SOLUTION: A thermal transfer sheet includes: a substrate sheet 1; and a dye layer 2 and a heat transferable protective layer 3 on one side of the substrate sheet 1 field-sequentially formed. A primer layer 5 is formed between the dye layer 2 and the substrate sheet 1. The water absorption rate of the substrate sheet 1 is 0.5-2.2 mass%.
