A composition is described that may be used in personal care products. The composition can serve as a preservative. In addition or alternatively, the composition may serve as a fragrance and/or as a coloring agent. The composition can contain an active compound, an organic acid, a solvent, and optionally a dispersant. In one embodiment, the active compound and the organic acid comprise all natural ingredients.

1. A personal care product for topical application to a user's skin or hair comprising:
a base composition; and a multi-functional composition, the multi-functional composition being present in the personal care product in an amount from about 0.1% to about 5% by weight, the multi-functional composition comprising an organic acid, a solvent; and an active compound having the following formula:wherein:
R1 and R2 are H or OH; R3 comprises H, OH, or OR5; R4 comprises R6COOR7; COOR7; or R8C═O; R5 is an alkyl group; R6 is an alkyl or alkenyl group; R7 is H, an alkyl group or an alkenyl group; and R8 is H, an alkyl group or an alkenyl group.
