PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption while avoiding adverse impact on network behavior caused by reducing transmit output power.SOLUTION: A method comprises: determining 702A whether a wireless node is in proximity to an access point; transmitting 704A a message frame on a wireless channel at first transmit power to protect one or more subsequent data frames; and transmitting 706A the subsequent data frames on the wireless channel to the access point at second transmit power that is reduced relative to the first transmit power.
