A gas container adapter (22) is provided for use with gas burner apparatus (10). The adapter has a first adapter fitting (24) for connection to the apparatus and a second adapter fitting (92) for connection to a gas cylinder (20). The adapter includes a closure (50) which can be moved between an open and a closed condition for allowing and not allowing, respectively, fluid flow communication between opposite ends of the adapter. The closure is adapted to be opened on connection of the apparatus to the adapter. The adapter can be used to enable the apparatus to be connected to the gas cylinder even though the apparatus itself is configured for connection to a gas cylinder having a different type of connection.
