A mesh network of communication devices is discloses in which each communication device is associated with a consumer device (for example in a home network). Each communication device comprises a relay unit configured to listen for packets and relay them over the network. Each communication device is configured to control the time it spends listening for packets depending on whether the consumer device is active or non-active with respect to the network. A non-active device which itself does not need to stay awake to receive packets for its own associated consumer device may reduce its listening time to save battery power. The network is configured such that communication devices implement a stochastic packet transport in which the combination of plural devices listening intermittently compensates for gaps in the listening of individual devices such that network routing performance does not suffer. |
