The device has switching chambers (8, 9) for respective current paths (5, 6), and switching contact arrangements comprising contacts (15, 18). The contacts are connected in a switched-on condition of the device and arranged at a distance from each other in a switched-off condition of the device. Extinguishing devices are formed for the respective paths for extinguishing an arc occurring between the contacts. An arc driver arrangement is arranged in one of the chambers, generates a magnetic field in the area of the arrangements and drives the arc into the extinguishing device.
