A geophysical cable or source cable 30 comprising a plurality of floats 34, spaced along the cable 30 length and configured to lift at least a portion of the cable 30, at least partially above the surface of the water, whereby the floats 34 include lateral deflectors. A wing shaped float may serve the role of the float and the lateral deflector. The cable 30 may be sufficiently stiff so the floats 34 support the entire of the cable 30 out of the water. The cable 30 may include spaced stiff and flexible segments. The floats 34 may be attached to the cable at the flexible segments. The survey source (figure 5, 32) may also include a float and lateral deflector. The survey source (figure 5, 32) may be an air gun, marine vibrator or an electromagnetic signal source. The rear of the cable 30 may comprise a further lateral deflector. The benefit of the invention is the reduction in hydrodynamic drag through the lifting of the cable out of the water.
|
