Oral care system, kit and method

A portable oral care system comprising a toothbrush having a detachable handle portion forming a dispenser containing an oral care product. The dispenser is configured as a dispensing pen having a dispensing orifice or applicator at one end. The dispenser includes a ratchet-type fluid dispensing system for delivering the oral care product. The dispenser includes a self-biasing push button actuator formed of a deformable elastomeric material with an elastic memory. A user may detach the dispenser from the toothbrush, apply the product to an oral surface by depressing the actuator, and re-mount the dispenser in the toothbrush for storage.

1. An oral care system comprising:
a toothbrush; and a dispenser detachably coupled to the toothbrush, the dispenser comprising:
a housing having an internal reservoir configured for containing a fluid;a dispensing orifice in the housing in fluid communication with the reservoir; anda fluid delivery system comprising a ratchet rod extending into the reservoir, an actuator operably coupled to the ratchet rod for imparting movement thereto, and a plunger assembly operably coupled to the ratchet rod and axially movable within the housing by activation of the actuator, the plunger assembly forming a selectively-positionable end wall of the reservoir, the plunger assembly comprising an outer cup seal slidably engaged with the housing and an inner plunger disposed at least partially in the outer cup seal, the plunger assembly including a pawl movably engaged with the ratchet rod, wherein the inner plunger defines an internal passageway, the pawl being disposed within the passageway and the outer cup seal so that the pawl is not directly exposed to an oral care fluid contained in the reservoir of the housing; and wherein activation of the actuator moves the plunger assembly in a first direction and dispenses the fluid from the reservoir via the orifice.
