[Class 140] A die for use in coating wire, as with a viscous liquid by the method described in Specification 509,193, has a gable-form structure with an orifice 31, Fig. 5, at the apex of the gable through which the wire 1 is passed upwards, the orifice being preferably rounded at its lower edge 43. Fig. 2 shows apparatus in which wire 1 is passed through a viscous liquid 4 in a container 3 formed of two sections, the joint between the sections being sealed by packing 14, which as shown consists of flexible tubing 15 with a covering of soft material 16 supported by rods 17. The die 5 is supported from the cover of the container by a holder 6. The die may be made by bending a sheet of spring steel, phosphor bronze or other resilient metal to the form shown in Fig. 4, edges being brought together at the top to form the gable. The bottom 33 has a slot 34 so that the wire can be inserted to pass through the aperture 31 at the gable. End portions 44 at the top are turned down to form bearing flanges, between which and the bottom 33, the holder 6 is loosely engaged. The form of die shown in Fig. 3 is modified in that portions of the sides are cut and turned inwards to form bearing flanges 39. With this form the support 6 engages loosely between the flanges 39 and flanges 38 at the ends of the top. Die holders 6<SP>1</SP> are provided above the casing 3 for use when a die within the casing is being exchanged.
