摘要 According to an embodiment, an active material for a battery is provided. The active material includes particles of the active material. The particles of the active material include a compound represented by chemical formula Ti_1-x_M1_x_Nb_2-y_M2_y_O_7. The particles of the active material have peak A belonging to (110) surface and exhibiting 2&thgr; in a range from 23.74 to 24.14&deg;, peak B belonging to (003) surface and exhibiting 2&thgr; in a range from 25.81 to 26.21&deg;, and peak C belonging to (-602) surface and exhibiting 2&thgr; in a range from 26.14 to 26.54&deg; in a X-ray diffraction pattern obtained by an X-ray diffraction method of the particles of the active material. The intensity of peak A I_A_, the intensity of peak B I_B_ and the intensity of peak C I_C_ satisfy relation (1): 0.80 <= I_B_/I_A_ <= 1.12; and relation (2): I_C_/I_B_ <= 0.80.
