PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of displaying an externally input image in such a size that a user can recognize characters included in the image, regardless of a distance between the display device and a user.SOLUTION: A control part 118 of a television includes: a distance detection part 133 which detects a distance from the television to a user; a character recognition part 132 which detects a minimum character size included in a sub-image input from a portable terminal; a display size calculation part 135 which adjusts a display size of the sub-image according to the minimum character size and the distance; a switching part 131 which switches whether or not the acquired sub-image is to be supplied to the character recognition part 132 and the display size calculation part 135; and a user setting extraction part 134 which extracts a user's favorite character size set by the user who watches the television in advance.
