532,158. Synthetic rubber. USINES DE MELLE. Aug. 18, 1939, No. 23865. Convention date, Sept. 16, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] Diolefines are polymerized in the presence of a peroxide of tetrahydrofurane or its homologues. The peroxides may be made by the careful oxidation of tetrahydrofurane or its homologues for instance by hydrogen peroxide or by exposure to air or oxygen. The peroxide may be concentrated by evaporation in air under slightly reduced pressure. In examples : (1)α-methyl tetrahydrofurane is stirred in oxygen at 10 atmospheres pressure for 24 hours and the peroxide thus formed is added to a dispersion of butadiene in a solution of dextrin, sodium carbonate, sulphoricinate and palmitate, the polymerization occurring in the cold ; (2)α-methyl tetrahydrofurane is peroxidized with hydrogen peroxide and the product is added to isoprene which is polymerized at 40‹C. ; (3) a butadiene dispersion, as in Example (1) is polymerized with the addition ofα-methyl tetrahydrofurane at 80‹C. and 12 atmospheres pressure.
