PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector in which light from an oblique direction is made incident on a light modulation element, which enhances the uniformity of the light made incident on the light modulation element and can be miniaturized.SOLUTION: The projector includes a light source, a diffraction optical element on which the light emitted from the light source is made incident, the light modulation element on which diffraction light emitted from the diffraction optical element is made incident, and a projection optical system on which the light emitted from the light modulation element is made incident. When a light beam made incident on the center of a region to be illuminated M irradiated with the diffraction light in the light modulation element is set as the main light beam of the diffraction light, the main light beam is made incident obliquely on the region to be illuminated M. When a surface being orthogonal to the incident surface to the region to be illuminated M of the main light beam and including the main light beam is set as a reference surface, the diffraction light has an intensity distribution asymmetric with respect to the reference surface. |
