[Class 4] For increasing the lift during landing &c. the boundary layer of air over the upper surface of an aeroplane wing is withdrawn solely by utilizing the suction of the usual propeller behind the plane. The upper surface of the wing may have simple holes but preferably tiltable aerofoils 2 are provided which open passages when a flap 4 on the lower surface of the wing is opened. The increase of lift may be varied by varying the amount of opening of the flap 4, and by dividing the two wings centrally and opening the flaps 4 to different degrees, lateral balancing may be effected. A machine is described having two fuselages, and a central nacelle carrying an engine and a rear propeller. Additional tractors may be provided at the front ends of the fuselages. The central portion of the wing is formed as shown in Fig. 2, but the end portions have holes communicating with the interior of the wing. A wing having holes in its upper surface and permanent ports in its rear edge opening in front of the propeller disc also is described. The top surface of the wing may be hinged instead of the bottom surface or there may be hinged flaps on both surfaces. More than one propeller may be provided along the rear edge of the wing. The aerofoils 2 and flap 4 may be spring loaded so as to open automatically when the speed of the aircraft falls.
