A method of applying a laser metal formed build layer (16) on a surface of an article (10). The surface of the article (10) is melted locally using a power source (22) to form a melt pool (14). Powdered metal (18, 32) is injected into the melt pool (14). The melt pool (14) is solidified to form the first protrusion. A build layer (16) having a desired microstructure and geometry on the surface of the article (10) is eventually formed. |
