The present invention relates to a PSA-type liquid crystal display element in which a mixture of a polymerizable compound and a liquid crystal composition is sandwiched between a first substrate and a second substrate and irradiated with energy rays in order to polymerize the polymerizable compound and achieve a PSA-type liquid crystal display element comprising a polymer that has a polystyrene-converted number-average molecular weight of 50,000 or more. Provided are: a PSA-type display element that applies voltage to perform alignment control of liquid crystal molecules that are oriented in an approximately vertical manner between substrates and wherein a pretilt angle is appropriately assigned without inhibiting the generation of a liquid crystal molecule pretilt angle so that good orientation stability is achieved, orientation with the substrates is uniform, and display defects are either eliminated or minimized; and a production method for the PSA-type display element. The PSA-type display element is useful for VA-mode and PSVA-mode liquid crystal display devices for driving an active matrix and can be applied to a liquid crystal display device such as a liquid crystal TV, a monitor, a portable telephone, or a smartphone. |
