The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for device-to-device communication (D2D communication), and more particularly, to a method and apparatus for device-to-device communication discovering an adjacent user equipment through a network in a wireless cellular communication system. The method for device-to-device communication by a user equipment according to the present invention comprises the steps of: transmitting a discovery request for discovering the adjacent user equipment to a server; scanning a discovery channel during a scanning time according to the discovery request; and when the adjacent user equipment is discovered as a result of the scanning, performing the device-to-device communication with the discovered adjacent user equipment, wherein the discovery request is used to enable the server to transmit a broadcast request to the adjacent user equipment in correspondence to the discovery request, and broadcast direction information includes information for enabling the adjacent user equipment to broadcast a discovery signal in the discovery channel during the scanning time.
