Modified polystyrene-based crosslinked resin particles which comprise polystyrene resin particles and, dispersed therein, fine poly(acrylic ester) resin particles that have an average particle diameter in the range of 30-1,000 nm. When about 1 g of the modified polystyrene-based crosslinked resin particles are dissolved in 50 ml of 25ºC toluene, an insoluble gel results, and the content of the gel is in the range of 5-25 mass%. The gel shows a degree of swelling in 25ºC toluene in the range of 10-20.
