The present disclosure is a method and system for producing a diol which includes contacting a first region of an electrochemical cell having a cathode with a catholoyte including carbon dioxide, contacting a second region of the electrochemical cell having an anode with an anolyte including an alkene and AX where A is a metal and X is one of F, CI, Br or I; and applying an electrical potential between the anode and the cathode sufficient to produce a first product recoverable from the first region and a halogenated compound recoverable from the second region. The method may further include reacting the halogenated compound recoverable from the second region with AOH in a reactor where A is a metal to produce a diol and co-produce AX.
